Shiv Ganga Garden in Thanjavur
Historically the park was built by Sevappa Nayaka, a 16th century Nayak ruler and received the status of a public park by municipal community in 1871-72. The park has got an ancient rain water harvesting system built in place to save the rain water that could be supplied to the Royal Palace and Bridheshwera Temple. This system was way ahead of its time and is par excellence. The park is decorated with loads of flowers of rare breed which enhance the beauty of it by several folds. The trees and greenery can make your lassitude vanish in few minutes. It is very calm to be relaxing in the beauty of nature. It is also a popular picnic spot in Thanjavur.
There are many attractions that are present in the garden besides the greenery and the flowers. These are a ride on the toy train that takes you to the inside of the garden to see the hidden beauty and gives a fun ride trip to children and adults alike. The other attractions include motor boat ride, which was introduced as a part of makeover plan for the world Tamil conference to take place in Thanjavur in 1994 and a sort of small zoological garden that is maintained by the municipality. All these things together make your visit to the garden very relaxing and entertaining as well.
